Specialty Sound

Specialty Sound began waaay back in 1989 when I volunteered to DJ a fraternity party with my collection of 12-inch singles (yes - vinyl) and some borrowed equipment. Although it took me a while to get here (full-time, that is), I love my "job" and wouldn't have it any other way! I am so very blessed to do what I love to do. This blog exists simply to share with you some of the experiences and joys that I get to be a part of...

DSCF9077Each year, The Knot holds a party in Dallas for all the wedding vendors in our market. This year’s party was planned by my good friend, Dana Carroll of Social by Dana Carroll.  She and Shana Thomas of The Urban Blossom really went above and beyond with the Cirque theme.  And, of course, a cool event like this needs a cool venue – The W / Victory hotel in Dallas.  I hadn’t been to The W in a while, but it looks like I’ll be back:

Good Morning Tommy!

Thank you! Your skills last night really contributed to the success of our event and everyone was really pleased with the overall outcome.

Do you mind if I add you to our preferred social catering vendor list? Your professionalism and style is much appreciated and I would like to work with you again soon on another event!

Warm Regards,

Trish | Catering Sales Manager | The W Dallas – Victory

Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos to share.  I was quite busy once the event got going between DJ’ing and visiting with people who came up.  It was amazing!

One of the many organizations that I belong to is the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE).  Each meeting is a great time to network and hang out with alot of the catering executives and salses staff that I work with each weekend (in a less-stressful environment than an event!)

This month, I was asked by Wendy Timson (Wolfgang Puck and Union Station in Dallas – previously with The Mansion) if I would moderate their Chef’s panel.  A little background here – for the past two years I’ve had the opportunity and pleasure of moderating a panel for June Wedding, Inc. (JWI) and so Wendy asked me if I would do the same for NACE.

The panel was great.  We had five panelists – one from the Rosewood Crescent Hotel, one from Don Ross Nabb, another that was a wine expert, and two other chefs (sorry if I’ve forgotten their affiliations).  Each of the panelists had a long and impressive set of credentials and “history”.  (Sidenote – I’m just too dang busy to watch TV, as I sit here are 11:23pm on a Wednesday night writing this, so we never watch Iron Chef and the other chef shows).  I really enjoyed what they had to say about the economy, trends, and so forth.

Dinner at the meeting was delicious!  Michael Carroll, Executive Chef with Don Ross Nabb presented us with Oso Bucco.  I’ve never had this dish before, but it’s now on my list of the top three.  WOW!

Aside from moderating the panel, we also provided sound for the evening (including movie-theme selections for the cocktail hour in the SoundStage annex), and a bit of lighting.

Enjoy the photos!

Surprise 50th, Hotel ZaZa

This past Friday I had the opportunity to DJ a surprise 50th Birthday part at Hotel ZaZa in Dallas.  If you aren’t familiar with ZaZa, it is a contemporary boutique hotel in Dallas with something of a Moroccan feel to it.  (That’s my opinion, anyway).

The Urban Oasis
During the winter months, they install a plexiglass top on the swimming pool, add a semi-permanent transparent tent and some lounge furniture, and you have a very trendy scene indeed (complete with color-changing lighting beneath the floor).  This was the setting for the Adamcik surprise party.  The theme?  Disco!

The guests were great and wore some of the best Disco outfits that I’ve seen in a while. Here’s a short slideshow from the evening.  Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight!

CityClub of Fort Worth is one of my favorite venues to work at.  It’s literally like my “home away from home.”  Every single member of their staff is wonderful, and I know each of them by name.  I just love being there!

A few times each year, City Club hosts an open house for brides to come in and visit with the preferred vendors and taste some of the fabulous faire that the Club has to offer.

This year, Amy, Heather and Sara went all out with a wonderful new idea…  Instead of “just” an open house, they invited several great planners and designers to design a table in their own style.  Other vendors attended as well, from photographers, to florists, to cake companies and, of course, entertainment.  (Not to mention the box of cupcakes I got to bring home with me – yummy!)

Amy was gracious enough to offer me the privilege of  providing sound and some lighting for both the social time in the ballroom, as well as a surprise fashion show on the fourth floor, in a wedding-ceremony arranged area.

Here are just a few photos from that night.  City Club – I love you!

The Fourth Floor - set for a ceremony. Beautiful floral arrangements abound, and we did some cool gobo textures around the room.

Tommy’s Fab Modeling Debut

So I joined NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) last month.  Me and Shezad (Hakim Sons Studio) decided to join together – sort of a “Pledge Brothers” thing, since they were having a membership drive (like Rush week, I guess).

Anyway, so I’ve been a member all of three weeks and Wendy Timson emails to see if I would model at the next meeting?  What??  Yea, well, you know – since I do practice my catwalk strut in the mirror each day.  Being the good sport, I said “Um – sure!”.

Apparently, I dress nice.

So – here’s a couple of candids that Steve and Kim Cooley (Carpe Vita Photography) were kind enough to capture for posterity’s sake. The meeting was at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

Cue Right Said Fred….

I guess I’ll scratch “Model” off my bucket list now!
